This week in the winery we've caught up with some of our contractors who were handpicking some of our Pinot Noir & Chardonnay grapes!
At Yealands, we use a combination of machine harvesting and handpicking for different reasons. When fruit is handpicked, it comes into the winery in full bunches with the stems still in tact. Handpicking allows us to experiment with some whole-bunch ferments and carbonic maceration. Fermenting fruit in whole bunches can produce different characteristics and textures in wines which our winemakers love experimenting with!
