Shoot Thinning

Now that the buds have bursted on our vines, our team is quick to start this first canopy management measure. This week at the winery we caught our Assistant Vineyard Manager Wayne Williams teaching our contract staff how to thin the shoots of some of our Gruner Veltliner grapes.

Our contract staff will walk the rows of our vines and take off some of the shoots that have bursted. This reduces the canopy that will grow from those shoots. Some benefits of this include a reduction of fruit shading and disease pressure. With a reduced canopy our fruit can get more of the sunlight they need, and wind flows through the vines easier reducing mould and mildew pressures.

This is the first of many times our vines will get touched through this new growing season.
